Alejandro Yoshii

Alejandro Yoshii investigates methods of indexical traces of the human body that transcend the physical gesture. It is with an interest in the interplay between bodies, emotions, language, and the social construction of the self that he reveals a series of traces that have been left behind by the bodies that enact these constructs.

Through drawing, painting, sculpture and performance, Yoshii uses the body as both subject and medium to explore individual and collective identity. He has developed a performative methodology based on the strategies of a forensic investigator to highlight certain social issues on race, gender, sexuality and spirituality that are usually concealed when encountered in the public realm. For him, presenting the traces of a private encounter between people, as a tangible manifestation of a now absent body, suggests an empirical and subjective evidence of a personal experience and a social interaction.

Repetition is frequently employed in much of Yoshii’s work as a meditative practice to understand the subject of a particular study, and which also serves to create a direct corporeal dialogue between the material and the act of mark making.
